Tenzin Deleg Rinpoche: Take action

Tenzin Deleg Rinpoche's suspended death sentence has been commuted to life imprisonment. Pressure must continue to be applied to the Chinese authorities to provide the opportunity for a free and fair re-trial.

Free Tibet Campaign needs your help; by faxing, calling, emailing or sending letters to the Chinese Government on his behalf, as well as asking British and European parliamentarians to also raise his case.

Following international pressure five Tibetans connected with the case have already been released. Please help secure the release of Tenzin Deleg Rinpoche.

There are four ways in which you can take action to help Tenzin Deleg Rinpoche:

1. Write to the UK and Luxembourg ministers responsible for China and human rights.?2. Write to the Chinese Government.?3. Lobby your MP to sign the latest EDM and encourage your MP & MEP to write direct to the Chinese authorities.?4. Take action in your local community.

?2. Write to the UK Foreign Minister and Luxembourg Prime Minister

You can help press Tenzin Deleg Rinpoche's case by writing to the British Under Secretary of State responsible for human rights and China, as well as the Luxembourg Prime Minister, who will take the lead in the EU's relations with China. (Luxembourg currently holds the EU Presidency until July 2005.)

Call on Foreign Minister, Bill Rammell MP and the Luxembourg Prime Minister, Jean-Claude Juncker to request:

Direct assurances from the Chinese Ambassadors in the UK and Luxembourg not to condemn him to face a lifetime in prison for a crime he did not commit.

Press them to seek the same assurance from the Chinese Foreign Minister.

Prime Minister of Luxembourg?Name: Mr Jean-Claude Juncker ?Address: Ministry of State ?4, rue de la Congregation?L-1352 Luxembourg ?Fax: + (00) 352 461720 ?Email: Ministere.Etat@me.etat.lu ?Salutation: Dear Prime Minister

?2. Write to the Chinese Government

Please send letters of appeal to those listed below. Please use the opportunity to call for an urgent and immediate investigation into the widespread allegations of torture in Sichuan Province in relation to the cases below.

a) Tenzin Deleg Rinpoche (Please also use the Chinese transliteration of his name, A'an Zhaxi)?

Welcome the commutation of Tenzin Deleg Rinpoche's death sentence. ?

Please call for the immediate and unconditional release of Tenzin Deleg Rinpoche. Failing that, press the Chinese authorities to allow for an open and fair retrial with access given to impartial international fair trial observers.?

Call for Rinpoche to be given immediate access to lawyers, medical personnel and family and friends. Free Tibet Campaign believes that he has been held incommunicado at the remote Chuangdong Prison in Sichuan Province since 26 January 2003.??b) Tashi Phuntsok (Chinese transliteration of his name, Zhaxi Pingcuo)?

Welcome the release of Tashi Phuntsok.?

Press China to give assurances that it will facilitate Tashi Phuntsok's immediate access to medical treatment, either in Tibet or allow him to seek medical treatment abroad with his family, if he so wishes. He has been described in reports as being a "broken man" as a result of his treatment in prison (Human Rights Watch report, 26 January 2005).?

Urge China not to condemn Tashi to the same harassment other former political prisoners have faced post-release (e.g constant monitoring of visitors, restrictions on movement etc).?

Urge China to launch an immediate investigation into the reason for Tashi Phuntsok's emerging a "broken man" and to make public the results. China must also undertake to punish those who may have been responsible for torturing Tashi Phuntsok during his incarceration.??c) Lobsang Tenphen (aka Tabo or Taphel) (Chinese transliteration of name: Lorang Dapei)?

Urge China to release Lobsang from his five year sentence which was handed down in July 2003. It was alleged that he had passed information to foreign journalists on Tenzin Deleg Rinpoche's case. State that freedom of information and expression are rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.?

Urge China to provide information on the state of his health given the preponderance of torture and terrible prison conditions in Tibet. ??d) Missing Monks?

Ask the authorities to clarify if they are holding Pasang and Choestom (from Jamyang Choekhorling monastery), or Tenpa Rabgyal (Chinese name: Danba Raojie) and Thubten Sherab (aka Kyido). The latter two are from Orthok monastery.???Addresses:
