UCS 29/06/07: Support demands for China to keep its Olympic promise

Support demands for China to keep its Olympic promise

29 June 2007

(Please act before 7 July)

As the countdown to the Beijing Olympics begins with little over a year to go, international pressure is growing for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to hold China to account.

On the eve of the 119th IOC meeting in Guatemala (4-7 July), press freedom organisation Reporters Without Borders has written to the IOC President, accusing China of taking the Games hostage and the IOC of failing to hold China to the promises made in its Olympic contract. The letter says:

"Throughout the world, concern is growing about ... these Olympics, which have been taken hostage by a government that balks at taking action to guarantee freedom of expression and respect for the Olympic Charter's humanistic values.

You know better than anyone that the Chinese government and Communist Party attach the utmost importance to the success of the Olympic Games for their own sakes, but without keeping any of the promises they have made.

Mr. President, it is not too late to get the Chinese organisers, who are for the most part also senior political officials, to release prisoners of conscience, reform repressive laws and end censorship."

Free Tibet Campaign supports this bold action by Reporters Without Borders and will add its support by writing directly to the IOC President Jacques Rogge, re-emphasising our concerns over China's continuing human rights abuses in Tibet and the failure to include Tibet in the area of free reporting for the Olympics. Individual supporters can also add their support by writing to the IOC President using the points listed below. The more people that put pressure on the IOC at this time, the greater chance we have that the IOC will act up to its responsibilities and hold China to account.

TAKE ACTION

Add your weight to the pressure on Jacques Rogge. Write, email or fax NOW calling for the following:

  • That the IOC takes action to hold the Chinese authorities to account and tells them that the contempt with which they treat their Olympic promise is unacceptable. With the entire Olympic community gathered in Guatemala City the time has come for the IOC to speak clearly.

  • That the IOC demands that China extends the free media access granted as part of the Olympic promise to include Tibet and Xinjiang with immediate effect.

  • Ask Dr Rogge to show his commitment to freedom of expression by speaking up on behalf of freedoms in Tibet and China before the start of the 2008 Olympic Games.
